SANe: the Social Arts NEtwork

So here is a little more about the plan for a walk from London to Cambridge. Some of this blog entry will have been in previous ones, but I thought I’d stick everything down in one place.

The date will be Friday April 2 to Sunday April 4 2010 – the Easter weekend. This means that the walk will begin on a bank holiday and so this should make lives a little easier for those wishing to take part. The start date is six months from this coming Friday, so plenty of time for organising, publicising and, most importantly, fundraising.

The Plan:

Inspired by the psychedelic tale of how, when Syd left London for the final time he walked all the way home to Cambridge, over the 2010 Easter weekend, a journey similar in spirit will be completed. The main focus will be on a walk, but the option will be there for those who wish to complete the distance by alternative means, provided it is still a physical challenge, for example run, cycle. The distance is estimated to be approximately 60 miles, although further route research is still to be carried out so an exact figure is not yet known.

The journey will begin in Hyde Park, not far from where Syd lived in Chelsea and the location for the final Pink Floyd performance at Live 8 in 2005 where they dedicated ‘Wish You Were Here’ to Syd. We plan to follow as nice a route as possible out of London, taking in any parks, canals and so on. We’re still open to suggestions for a finishing point in Cambridge, but have a few ideas already. One thought is for the Sunday to partly involve a tour of some key Barrett-related locations in Cambridge. It is planned that, with this idea in mind, the longest day of the walk will be the middle day, the Saturday. We want this walk (or whatever method of getting their you choose) to be as much of an event that everyone involved can feel part of, and so will be asking for suggestions of places we can go to along the way, be that London, Cambridge or in between – if anyone knows of decent pubs on route we’d love to hear about them!

We plan to provide a few suggestions for accommodation, although one idea we like is for those who fancy it to camp. This would keep the cost down and would also add to the community spirit. That said, tents aren’t to everyone’s taste and alternatives will be given to everyone that signs up.

The aim of this is to raise money for the centre which Rosemary Breen spoke about in the interview we conducted with her earlier this year. Now the project has a working title of ‘The Syd Barrett Centre for Socially Inclusive Arts’.

Key Dates from here:

Further information on the event, plus how you can sign up should you wish to take part, will be available by mid November, the week beginning of Monday 16.
We will open the registration for this event in early December, date to be announced in November. A small registration fee will be required from anyone wishing to take part, this will be no more than £20. The Syd Barrett Fund will also offer support and suggestions for those that sign up regarding fundraising.

Q: I want to take part, what do I do now?
A: You don’t actually have to do anything just yet, although we’d like expressions of interest so we can get a feel for how many might be up for this. We will be publicising this in all the usual places in November, fansites, messageboards, our own website, mailing lists, this blog and our various social networking places.

Q: I have a suggestion for this event.
A: Either leave a comment at the bottom of this blog entry, or email simon@escapeartists.co.uk. If you’ve any questions which haven’t been answered in this entry, chances are we don’t have an answer yet, but try me on that email anyway.

The suggestion of a walk came to us from a fan of Syd a couple of weeks ago, and so we’re still at the getting ideas together stage. We hope this will be an enjoyable event which gives the fundraising for the arts centre a big push.

Keep checking this blog for further news when we have it, plus our
Twitter will have news, as long as it can be squeezed into 140 characters of course.

What is SANe?

Think of SANe as a meta- network, an adhocracy, for people, organisations and other networks that are working in the field of arts and social action. The only requirement for joining SANe is that you have an interest in the arts as a means for raising awareness: a way of groping towards a collective super-ego or social mind.

SANe is supported by the Syd Barrett Fund which, amongst other things, is working towards the creation of the Syd Barrett Social Arts Centre in Cambridge, UK. More...

SANe, the Social Arts Network, exists to facilitate communication between people who are interested in the development of socially inclusive arts practice, services, exhibitions and productions. The network is managed by

Escape Artists but it is open to everyone. Please feel free to upload your photos, videos, music and research papers, or to start your own forum or group.

Games for Actors and Non-Actors by Augusto Boal

It's a good idea to put your photos into an album as soon as you upload them; it makes them easier to find and gives them a context. And we'd be grateful if everyone could add either a picture of themselves or a company logo to their profile. SANe Books

Visit the SANe bookstore for a great range of books on socially inclusive arts. A percentage of any book sale made through SANe is donated to Escape Artists (UK registered charity no. 1086004) and helps to pay for the costs of managing this network.
